Hip hop music, also called hip-hop,rap music or hip-hop music, is a music genre consisting of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping DJing/scratching, break dancing and graffiti writing. One must recognise both the demonic and the progressive within hip hop’s meaning-making efforts and must urge maintenance of an affirming stance regarding human interaction, which continues to privilege the development of healthy life options while maintaining some flexibility with respect to the framing of that process – not tying it too closely to any one religious orientation, one arrangement of religious aesthetics, one theological grammar and vocabulary. Finally, the type of theological and religious attention to rap music and hip hop culture called for in this special issue can result in a more robust conceptual framework for our theoretical take on the rich religious dimension(s) of African American experience. Rap music as a terrain for the articulation of religious struggle and redemption forces a re-examination of the assumed cartography of religious engagement. It makes it easier to recognise the historical nature of religion and the manner in which religious redemption and life are worked out within troubled space, within the midst of absurdity.
